Islanders split with Lincoln Southeast
LINCOLN Grand Island split with Lincoln Southeast on Tuesday, winning the first game 8-2 before falling 12-0 in five innings.
Kash Kalkowski held the Knights (1-1) to one earned run in five innings of work in the opener. He went 4-for-4 at the plate.
Nathan Zook also went 4-for-4 with three of his hits coming with three outs. Brandon Tjaden hit his second home run of the season.
The tables turned in the second game. Southeast broke the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the second inning to drop Grand Island to 2-2 on the season.
"In game one, Kash came out and pitched really well," said Grand Island coach Rick Kissack, who picked up his 100th win. "(Lincoln Southeast) is preseason No. 4, and we felt good coming out with the win.
"In game two we got the ball up and they hit it all over. They're a very good hitting team."
Grand Island returns to Lincoln Saturday for a triangular with Lincoln Southweast and Omaha Gross.

Cenral Catholic boys beat Holdrege, 3-2 in OT
HOLDREGE Eric Ortiz's third goal, at 19:57 in overtime, gave Grand Island Central a 3-2 victory over Holdrege on Tuesday.
The Crusaders (1-1) trailed 1-0 in the first half when Ortiz registered his first goal at the 33 minute mark. His second goal came in the second half to tie the score once more.
GICC co-coach Bruce Bombeck said his team controlled the game, giving credit to the play of the defense besides Ortiz.
"We allowed only six shots. Our kids played hard," Bombeck said, citing the play of Luke Wagner, Nick Karn, Jared Bombeck, Casey Wiens and John Lilly.
Lincoln Southeast downs GISH girls, 4-0
LINCOLN The Islanders fell to 0-2 on the season after dropping a 4-0 decision to Lincoln Southeast on Tuesday.
GISH trailed 1-0 in the half, but Southeast added three second half goals. Despite the loss, Islander coach Chuck DeWitt was encouraged.
"It was a lot better effort than last week (an 8-0 loss to Lincoln East)," DeWitt said. "Ali Higgins came up with some big saves for us. The girls are getting better."
Islander boys fall to Lincoln Southeast, 2-0
LINCOLN Grand Island couldn't take advantage of a strong wind at its back in the second half, falling 2-0 to Lincoln Southeast on Tuesday.
Southeast, with a strong 30-40 mph wind at its back in the first half, scored both of its goals. GISH (0-2) couldn't match the effort in the second half.
"We had three fantastic chances to score in the second half, but we couldn't put the ball in the back of the net," GISH coach Jeremy Jensen said.
"Our defense played well, but until we find someone who can put the ball in the net we're going to struggle," Jensen said.

Kearney Catholic slips past GICC girls, 5-4
KEARNEY The Grand Island Central Catholic girls dropped a 5-4 dual to Kearney Catholic on Tuesday.
The Crusaders got wins from Jessica Wojcik at No. 3 singles, Jessica Bender at No. 5 singles and Nicole Jacobson at No. 6 singles. The doubles team of Hannah Bolton and Karin Hamik at No. 3 also won for GICC.
"It could've gone either way," GICC coach Matt Westfall said. "At one match we had a girl who lost after having two match points. Our No. 1 doubles team gave their No. 1 team a pretty good match and their team was state champions last year.
"It was a good effort, but we've still got a lot to work on," Westfall said.
