KEARNEY Junior Leon de Winter went 3 for 5 with five RBIs and the Nebraska-Kearney baseball team took advantage of 11 walks to beat Dakota Wesleyan, 13-7, Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Field.
In a game that was just added to the schedule, UNK improved to 10-13 while the NAIA Tigers dropped to 5-6.
The Lopers got all the runs they needed over the first two innings as DWU starter Ryan Santiago struggled to find the plate. In two innings of work, he walked nine, hit two Lopers and threw one wild pitch.
By the time Sanitago left, UNK was ahead 8-0. Besides the base on balls, Santiago gave up two-run singles to junior Brad Hull and sophomore Blake Cover in the second inning.
For the game, the Tigers outhit the Lopers, 9-7, but UNK scored nine runs off its hits.
A catcher and first baseman from The Netherlands, de Winter hit a two run homer his first collegiate dinger in the seventh inning. In nine games this year, de winter is 10 for 20 with nine RBIs.
Cover also had a good day at the plate, going 2 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Finally, leadoff hitter Chris Gillaspy was officially 0 for 2 with two runs scored. In his first four at bats, he got hit twice and walked twice.
On the mound, Kearney senior Seth Svoboda didn't get the win but he did throw three scoreless innings. Three Loper relievers worked the final six innings and gave up five earned runs on eight hits and a walk.
UNK is scheduled to play New Mexico Highlands this Thursday-Saturday in a four-game RMAC series.
