Grand Island Senior High's girls team opened its season in solid fashion with a 6-3 dual win over Fremont on Friday afternoon in Fremont.
The Islanders got singles wins from Brigette Root (No. 2 singles), Sharon Zach (No. 3), Ashley Wiedel (No. 5) and Christina Bandasack (No. 6). GISH came out on top in two of three doubles matches with the teams of Kelsie Olson and Root (No. 1) and Wiedel and Bandasack (No. 3) earning wins.
GISH co-coach Nancy Cowgill said the win was a pleasant surprise.
"Fremont is a team that has girls who have played for several years," she said. "It was a good win for us."
With winds gusting to over 30 mph, Cowgill said the Islanders showed enough mental toughness to make a difference.
"We had matches where our girl hit the ball back just one more time and made her opponent make just one more shot," Cowgill said. "We still have work to do, but it was a good effort."
