Platt Duetsche Ladies Society

Members of the Platt Duetsche Ladies Society met March 7 for their monthly luncheon and meeting. March honorary birthdays were recognized. Viola Ruff is celebrating her 90th birthday this month. Loreen Czatlowski, Maxine Rathman, and Ruby Harders were guests. Initiated as a new member was Lois Niemoth.

Door prizes were won by Louise Zimmerman, Delavon Herald, Rosie Starostka, Robyn Kamper, Lorraine Liebhart, Mary Ann Degan, Judy Mead, Donna Peters, Lorraine Stoltenberg, and Marlene Byerly. Pitch winners were Carolyn Luebbe, Gloria Enyeart, Babe Bamesberger, Rita Kubicek, Marlene Sargent, Delavon Herald, and Delores Meyers.

Pinochle winners were Eleanora Miller, Imogene Williams, and Micki Lowry. Double pinochle winners were Donna Spiehs, Shirley Bruhns, and Jackie Bungee. Sheepshed winners were Lois Obermeier, Arlene Obermiller, Shirley Boltz, Arlene Remboldt, Alice Kistler, Dorothy Helmbrecht, and Maxine Rathman.

The next monthy meeting will be April 4 and off Friday will be at 1:30 p.m. March 18.

Grand Island China Painters

The Grand Island China Painters met March 3 at the First United Methodist Church with eight members present. Mrs. Joanne Nielsen presented the lesson on painting forget-me-nots with scrolling. St. Patrick's Day refreshments were provided by Edith Soper.

The business meeting opened with a "thought for the day" offered by Shirley Cunningham. Mrs. Soper reported on the State Board Meeting. Because the World Show is in Omaha in 2009, state officers will remain an additional year. It was decided to also retain our club officers. Raffle tickets were distributed for our April 17-19 State Convention drawings. Four sessions of paint-a longs are scheduled for Thursday, and six sessions on Friday, as well as a "quick-tips" session. Rhyne China Supply will be represented. Pre-ordered special items will be brought without postage cost.

For the April1 meeting, Janet Hruza will direct the lesson on violets. Members need to bring display items for the convention, china supplies, and a sack lunch.

Grand Island Child Care Association

The Grand Island Child Care Association met on March 10 in the Child Care Lab at Central Community College. The speaker was Roxanne Vipond, the director of Child Care Solutions who spoke about Autism.

Upcoming events include the State Child Care Conference which will be held at the Ramada Inn in Kearney the evening of April 25 and all day April 26. Della Treffer was selected to attend the conference at no cost. The State gives one member a free pass and Treffer was chosen.

Election of new officers for the upcoming year took place. Roseann Allen will remain as President for the year, Karen Wegner will remain as Treasurer for the year and Robin Bennett will remain as Cheer Person for the year. The Vice President and Secretary positions are still pending until next meeting.

Discussion was about the Free Dental Clinic for Children which is opening.

Next meeting will be April 14 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Sherryl Gannon giving a Family Service Workshop.

Danish Brotherhood Lodge #211

The Danish Brotherhood Lodge #211 met March 4 at Charlie's Station in Elba with Gary and Charlotte Rasmussen hosting the event. Fourteen members answered roll call.

The State Convention to be held at the Elks Club in Superior was discussed.

Lunch was served, followed by playing cards. The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. April 1 at the home of Jimmy and Ruthie Jacobsen in St. Paul.

Hall County VFWA 1347

The Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW met on March 3 at the UVC. Membership is 142 annual members and 147 life members. Anyone interested in joining can for $8 until June 1.

Jane Nelson gave a report on Mid-Winter Conference held in Kearney on Feb. 9 and 10. The District 11 winner of the Voice of Democracy placed third in the State was Jordan Kuszak.

Linda Steefe read an article "A Soldier Killed in Combat May Owe the Nation Even More."

The next meeting will be April 7 and will begin with a pot luck dinner at 6 p.m. It will also be election night.

Beta Sigma Phi

On Feb. 9, 36 members of Beta Sigma Phi attended the annual Valentine event at the Saddle Club.

Following the dinner the group was entertained by Pricilla Balasa, the band director at Central Catholic High School. She played flute and the Irish Penny flute. She was accompanied by Kim Wilsey.

The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the individual chapters Queens. They were Nebraska Epsilon Masters: Connie Robinson; Nebraska Omicron Masters: Shirley Grudzinski; and Preceptor Alphi Xi: Carolyn Lictenwalter.

Prairie Pioneer Quilt Guild

The Prairie Pioneer Quilt Guild met March 13 at Blessed Sacrament Church. The members were treated with a trunk show given by Sandi Kosch.

Kosch's presentation was centered on why members should take that workshop. She had many examples to share.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. April 10 at Blessed Sacrament Church. Anyone interested is welcome to attend.
