A man has been charged with a felony and a misdemeanor for a domestic assault stemming from a fight about Easter.
Jon D. Bruhn, 38, of 216 N. Harrison, was charged in Hall County Court Monday with felony strangulation and misdemeanor third-degree domestic assault.
The incident occurred at the North Harrison home on Saturday afternoon.
Grand Island police Sgt. Dean Elliott said Bruhn and his girlfriend, Sharon Jones-McWhorter, 49, were arguing over Easter. He choked her and swung a knife at her. He also pushed over a TV and a shelf, which hit her knees as it fell, Elliott said.
According to court documents, Bruhn used a choke hold on Jones-McWhorter. She grabbed hold of him in an effort to get away. As she tried to get out the door, Bruhn opened the knife and started to swing at her. However, she fell down and the knife didn't hit her. After the TV and shelf were knocked over, Jones-McWhorter left the home and called police from her daughter's house, according to court documents.
Elliott said officers didn't know specifics about the argument.
According to court documents, Jones-McWhorter told officers Bruhn was her "live-in boyfriend of one year."
Bruhn was arrested Saturday and officers found the knife described by Jones-McWhorter in his possession. He told police he had pushed the TV and shelf over but didn't believe it had hit his girlfriend, according to court documents.
He was released Monday on his own recognizance but was ordered not to have any contact with Jones-McWhorter.
His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 3 p.m. May 14.
