From antique cars to muscle cars, who knows what kinds of classics will cruise into the 17th annual Fonner Park Classic Car Show on Saturday, March 29.
From noon to 5:30 p.m., expect to see a variety of cars ranging from the 1930s to 1970s. An awards show will take place immediately after the car show, and at 7 p.m., show goers will be able to dance the night away as the Rumbles take the stage.
Fonner Park has helped sponsor the show over the last 17 years, said Dan Oberg, organizer of the Classic Car Show. For the last four years, it has been a fundraiser to help various charities.
This year, all proceeds from the show will go to help an orphanage in Ukraine. In the past, charities that have benefited have been Hope Harbor, the Grand Island Community Food Pantry at the Salvation Army and Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity.
After the show, more than 25 awards will be given to the winning vehicles.
"We place cups in front of the cars, people put money into the cups, and that is how they vote for the car or cars they like. How much money the car gets is how it wins," Oberg said. "Awards are presented by the cars that make the most money. There are 15 regular class awards and 10 high class awards for cars that raised the most."
The show space is currently limited to 50 entries. The show itself, though, has grown over time.
"We probably saw about 10 or 15 cars when we first started," Oberg said.
Admission to the car show is free. The car show will be presented on the Fonner Park concourse. Afterwards, the Rumbles dance will be free to those who attend the horse races in the afternoon. Admission will be charged to those who did not attend the races.
