HENDERSON An 18-year-old senior at Heartland Community Schools was killed in a rollover accident Tuesday morning.

Keith Traudt of rural Aurora was driving east on a gravel county road when the Mazda he was driving went into a ditch, rolled and hit a power pole, Hamilton County Attorney Michael Powell said.

The accident occurred in southeast Hamilton County, about six miles west of Henderson.

It was reported to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department by a passerby at about 8 a.m. Tuesday and is believed to have occurred at about 7:45, Powell said.

Traudt was not wearing a seat belt and was found inside the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Heartland Superintendent Norm Yoder said Traudt was less than two months away from graduating.

Traudt lived about 12 miles south of Aurora and had opted into the district since 2000-01, when he was in fifth grade. His mother and aunt are both bus drivers for the district.

Yoder said Traudt was very involved in FFA and had worked in maintenance at the school last summer.

"He was a good kid who was always ready to help the next guy," Yoder said.

Yoder said the mood at Heartland Community has been somber over the past two days but added that the school's crisis team had come together Tuesday to offer grief counseling into the evening with local counselors and pastors.
