COLLEGE GOLF

UNK men finish 15th at Oklahoma tournament

KEARNEY The Nebraska-Kearney men's golf team began the spring season by shooting a 933 and placing 15th at the UCO/Kickingbird Classic in Edmond, Okla.

The two-day tournament, hosted by Central Oklahoma, concluded play Tuesday at the par 70 Kickingbird Golf Course

The Lopers had rounds of 301, 317 and 315. Midwestern State of Texas and the host Bronchos each shot an 870 but UCO won the team title on a playoff hole.

Ord sophomore Devon Kastler and Broken Bow junior Preston Foster paced the Loper attack, each firing a 232 to tie for 52nd place.

HC men take title at invitational in Kansas

Hastings College won its second consecutive invite at the Oklahoma Panhandle State University Spring Invite. The invite was played Monday and Tuesday at the Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Garden City, Kan.

The Broncos fell behind the leader by 10 strokes after the first day, but rallied to beat the host school by four strokes. Junior Robert Shannon from Park City, Utah, and freshman Will Logsdon of Evergreen, Colo., lead the Broncos with two-day total scores of 152, which tied them in fourth place for the event.

Overall medalists were Robert Hamilton from Panhandle State and Tom Shaw from Northwestern Oklahoma State, who each shot 149.


BASEBALL

G.I. Youth Baseball to host tryouts at GISH

Grand Island Youth Baseball will be holding tryouts Saturday at Grand Island Senior High in the West Gym. Any youth ages 9-14 (new and returning) wanting to play baseball this year must tryout. Players will only need their gloves and tennis shoes. Please no cleats or bats. Youth 15 or older will be notified of tryouts at a later date. Youth ages 4-8 do not tryout and will be notified by their coach of their first practice.

Tryout times are as follows: 9-year-olds at 8 a.m., 10-year-olds at 9 a.m., 11-year-olds at 10 a.m., 12-year-olds at 11 a.m., 13-year-olds at 1 p.m. and 14-year-olds at 2 p.m.

Any youth wanting to register can in person from 9-12 (please bring cash or check). Coaches are asked to bring a picture ID to the tryouts. Make-up tryouts will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday.


SOFTBALL

Huskers add doubleheader with Northern Iowa

The Nebraska softball team has added a doubleheader with the Northern Iowa Panthers on Monday beginning at 2 p.m., NU coach Rhonda Revelle announced Wednesday.

NU, which has played the fewest games of any team in the Big 12 Conference, added the doubleheader to make up for a pair of lost games the weekend of Feb. 23 due to inclement weather in Louisville, Ky.

Tickets for the doubleheader can be purchased by calling 1-800-8-BIG-RED and are available on the day of the game at the ticket window located at the main entrance to Bowlin Stadium. Fans need only one ticket to enjoy both games.

Due to the late scheduling of Monday's doubleheader, the Nebraska Athletic Department is pleased to announce that fans unable to attend can follow all of the action on Huskers.com, which will provide free, live streaming video of both games.


VOLLEYBALL

NU coach Cook to speak at FCA luncheon April 7

The Central-Northeast Nebraska Fellowship of Christian Athletes will be hosting the "FCA Influence Luncheon" featuring Nebraska head volleyball coach John Cook on April 7.

The FCA Influence Luncheon will be from 11:45 a.m.- 1 p.m. at the Mid-town Holiday Inn in Grand Island and is open to the public ($15 per person). Seats must be reserved in advance by contacting Barb at 381-6232.

Along with a talk by Cook, the program will include an update on the area FCA ministry.

FCA-Nebraska believes that there are two ways of doing sports just as there are two ways of doing life: man's way and God's way. The primary role of FCA-Nebraska is as a training center for athletes and coaches to become mature from practice in order that they might be able to think God's thoughts and then do things God's way Doing Sports God's Way.


COLLEGE TRACK

NU men enter outdoor season rankings at No. 17

LINCOLN The USTFCCA (United State Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association) released its outdoor preseason rankings Wednesday with the Nebraska men's track and field team ranked No. 17 with 116.07 points. Florida State came out on top of the men's poll with 259.17 points.

The men's squad returns 12 athletes who competed at the 2007 NCAA Midwest Regional, including six NCAA Championship qualifiers. The returnees are led by senior team co-captain Dusty Jonas, a seven-time All-American and 2008 NCAA indoor high jump national champion. Jonas is currently ranked second nationally in the high jump and No. 10 in the long jump, earning the team an impressive 27.06 points. Of the 197 teams ranked, Jonas alone would rank No. 70.

Other Huskers to keep an eye on this spring include All-Americans Scott Wims, Lukas Hulett, and Dan Christensen along with senior Peter van der Westhuizen, sophomore Dax Danns and freshman Paul Hamilton.

The Husker women came close to making the top 25 as they are ranked No. 30 in the preseason rankings with 75.08 points. The women return 11 athletes who competed at the 2007 NCAA Midwest Regional with six of them advancing to the NCAA outdoor meet. LSU is ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll with 323.74 points.


SOCCER

GISH JV matches rescheduled

The Grand Island Senior High girls and boys junior varsity matches against York, rained out last week, have been rescheduled for 5 p.m. April 11in York.


AUTO RACING

Conestoga Mall to host race car show this weekend

Mid-Nebraska Speedway and the Conestoga Mall in Grand Island will host the annual Checkered Flag Race Car Show on Saturday and Sunday. The mall hours are from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

IMCA Hobby Stocks, IMCA Modifieds, Grand National Late Models and the Happy Hornets will be featured at the show. The public is invited to come out and visit with the drivers, get autographs, pick up rules and schedules. Fans are also invited to sign up for free passes to Mid-Nebraska Speedway.
