Spring means football, golf and cranes

The Husker Faithful have a little extra bounce in their step this week with the start of spring practice. First-year football savior Bo Pelini has promised to shake things up in Lincoln with more physical practices and more energy, which is code for "the pads, they be a'poppin." With the Spring Game in several weeks, the Faithful are eager to see a new psyche emerge from team. Something tells us the third and fourth teams won't be engaged in water fights during practice this spring.

Usually this time of the year finds the duffers in the garage frantically looking for their golf clubs behind the boxes of Christmas decorations and the snow shovel. But given the chilly temps of late, it may be a few more weeks before the clubs get unearthed. But just keep in mind that it is a good day anytime that we aren't shoveling.

Our annual visitors from the south, the sandhill cranes have certainly given us some spectacular shows this year. The sunsets have been thick with swirling circles of cranes and geese as they settle down for the evenings. It is an annual miracle and one can't help but wonder how they manage their annual migrations from the gulf to the tundra. The cranes must enjoy their extended rest stop along the Platte River. Of course the fact that Nebraska does not allow them to be hunted may be a big reason for their unhurried stay in the area's cornfields.
