A Grand Island man was arrested Tuesday morning for stabbing his estranged girlfriend in the arm and for striking her in the face and on the head.

Jose Martinez, 21, was arrested at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday after police were called to 644 Faidley Place No. 4, said Grand Island police Capt. Robert Falldorf. No charges had been filed against Martinez in Hall County Court as of Tuesday afternoon.

The incident began at about midnight, when Martinez showed up at the apartment, which is where his estranged girlfriend, Cindy Garcia, 18, lives alone, Falldorf said.

She let him in, and an argument followed at about 3 a.m., Falldorf said. Sometime between 3 and 5 a.m., Martinez went to the kitchen and retrieved a small paring knife, which he used to poke Garcia in the arm. He also held the knife to her throat and threatened her because he believed she was seeing another man, Falldorf said.

Garcia suffered a half-inch puncture wound to her arm. Upon their arrival, officers also noticed bruising on her face and head from where they believed Martinez had kicked and hit her, Falldorf said.

At about 5 a.m., Martinez apparently realized he harmed Garcia and began apologizing. She waited until he passed out before going to a neighbor's home to call for help, Falldorf said.

Officers arrested Martinez at Garcia's apartment. They believe he had used methamphetamine prior to arriving at the apartment, Falldorf said.

Garcia refused medical treatment for her injuries, Falldorf said.

Martinez was arrested for second-degree assault, using a weapon to commit a felony and false imprisonment.
