HASTINGS A shorthanded Grand Island Senior High squad scored three unanswered goals in the first half en route to a 5-3 victory over Hastings on Tuesday.
The Class B No. 9-rated (Omaha World-Herald) Tigers took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick, but the Islanders stormed back to hold a 3-1 halftime advantage.
Hastings (3-3) cut it to 3-2 on a header before Grand Island got two more goals to put the game away.
Johnny Venegas led Grand Island (3-3) with a pair of goals. Also scoring for the Islanders were Eric Jacobo, Hector Gutierrez and Derek Beisner.
Grand Island played without four players who were suspended for disciplinary reasons and could be out "for a significant period of time" according to coach Jeremy Jensen.
Winning while shorthanded left Jensen happy.
"I'm incredibly pleased," he said. "At one point we had five freshmen playing. They didn't miss a beat."

GINW extends win streak to four
HOLDREGE Grand Island Northwest scored three times in the first half en route to a 4-1 victory over Holdrege on Tuesday.
Matt Smith gave the Vikings (4-3) the lead off a Brad Rauert assist at 13 minutes, 15 seconds.
The Dusters (2-5) tied it up at 23:30 before Northwest took the lead for good.
Rauert scored in the 31st minute, and Jason Ogdon made it 3-1 in the 39th.
Julian Monasterio accounted for the Vikings' final goal at 77:45.
"The kids played well," Northwest coach Roger Doud said. "We came back and (goalkeeper) Adam Wemhoff did a nice job at 1-1. They had a (penalty kick) opportunity. He stopped the ball and that gave us the momentum."
Holdrege's goal was the first one given up by Northwest during its four-game win streak.
"Overall the defense played pretty sound," Doud said. "We tried to clear the ball out and it banged off the wrong player (on Holdrege's goal).
"We've started to pick up momentum. It was a good outing."
Northwest hosts the annual Viking Cup on Saturday. It faces Grand Island Central Catholic at 10 a.m. and Lexington at 2:30 p.m.

Hastings top Islanders, 5-1
HASTINGS Hastings scored a pair of quick goals en route to a 5-1 victory over Grand Island Senior High on Tuesday.
"We have a lot of questions and not a lot of answers right now," Islander coach Chuck DeWitt said. "We're still looking for answers. We need people to step up and take charge."
After the Class B No. 7-rated Tigers (3-3) took the early 2-0 lead, the Islanders scored a goal by Audie Aguilar off a Gabby Ayala assist.
But Hastings regained the momentum.
"They scored late, late, late in the first half," DeWitt said. "That made it 3-1 instead of 2-1 (at halftime)."
The early goals hurt an Islander team that is struggling at 1-5.
"We weren't ready to play," DeWitt said. "It was one of those games where everyone was off their game."
Northwest falls to Holdrege, 4-1
HOLDREGE Grand Island Northwest couldn't overcome the absence three starters in falling to Holdrege 4-1 on Tuesday.
The Dusters (4-3) scored twice in the first half, including on a penalty kick in the ninth minute.
Trailing 3-0, the Vikings (3-4) scored on a goal by Kendra Davis off an assist from Rachel Purdy.
"We used a lot of younger kids," GINW coach Craig Charron said. "Kendra Davis, a freshman, played in a new spot. It was nice to see her get in and do good things."
The Vikings missed starters Tara New and Lydia Myers due to injuries and another who was attending a funeral.
"It was kind of a tough game," Charron said. "We're short people."
