Voting for the May 13 primary election will begin on Monday.
"I want to publicize the fact that any registered voter can vote early," Secretary of State John Gale said. "This can be done by voting at county election offices or by mail."
Hall County Election Commissioner Dale Baker said voters can cast ballots on the voting machine in her office beginning Monday morning. She'll also begin sending out mail-out ballots to voters who requested them.
Races of interest on the May 13 ballot include the presidential election, Baker said.
On the local scene, she said, voters will cast ballots for public defender, Wood River mayor and two contested county board seats District 2 and District 6.
"Those two (county board seats) will be decided in the primary because (the candidates) are the same party," Baker said.
The primary election will also serve as a run-off for multiple candidates seeking legislative seats in District 41 and District 33. Only two candidates in each race will advance to the general election on Nov. 4, she said.
In District 41, which is an area northwest of Grand Island, there are five candidates Jerry Peterson, Gary Rasmussen, Kate Sullivan, Paul Eurek and Jerome Warner.
In the Hastings area of District 33, there are three candidates Dennis Utter, Marvin "Butch" Hughes and Chuck Shoemaker.
The District 35 legislative seat, which primarily represents Grand Island, has two candidates Gregg Neuhaus and Mike Gloor. Even though both will advance to the general election, both names will appear on the May 13 primary ballot, Baker said. State law requires that the names of all legislative candidates be printed on the ballot, regardless of whether the race is contested.
Noncontested local races, however, will not be printed on the primary ballot.
Because of that, Baker said, the ballot may appear a bit bleak compared to past election years.
The deadline to register to vote is April 25 for mail-in and motor-vehicle registrations. Registering in person can be done until 6 p.m. May 2 at county election offices, Gale said.
As far as requesting early ballots, those requests must be made before 4 p.m. May 7. The last day to cast an early ballot is the close of polls on Election Day, which will be 8 p.m. Mail-in ballots must be returned before poll closing in order to be counted.
The last day to early vote in person will be May 12.
