Joseph's College announces March honor students

Deanna Hopkins was named student of the month for March at Joseph's College of Beauty in Grand Island.

Named to the honor roll for the month (94 percent and above) were Tonia Fangmeier, Whitney Flinn and Kayla Stoltenberg.

Other honors for the month went to Lacey Tvrdy, high retail sales; Fangmeier, high GPA; and Tvrdy, high credits.

Achieving perfect attendance for March were Fangmeier, Flinn and Hopkins. Fangmeier and Flinn were also recognized as having perfect attendance for their entire enrollment.

Hastings College to host jazz festival

Hastings College will host its annual jazz festival today through Tuesday which includes f two nights of free jazz music open to the public and a two-day jazz clinic for high school students.

In honor of the college 125th anniversary, the festival will feature an alumni big band directed by John Mills who was Hastings College jazz program director from 1974 to 1980.

Area schools participating in the jazz clinic include Hastings High School, Grand Island Northwest High, and Grand Island Public Schools.

Area musicians participating in the alumni big band include Lew Cole of Grand Island and Jerry Neeman on Trumpets, and Marc LaChance of Hastings College on Trombone.

Activities

Jennifer Ottens of Burwell and Ashley McWhirter of Hastings were part of the Circle K at the University of Nebraska at Kearney who helped with a Golden Age Prom at the Kearney Senior Hospitality Center. Rebecka Schimonitz of Grand Island was publicity chair for the event.

Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture veterinary technology student Rachel Rosas will be embarking on a one-year internship with the Animal Medical Center in New York. Rosas, a native of Grand Island, is a second year vet tech student at NCTA, and is slated to graduate in May. Her internship is scheduled to begin in June.

Megan See of Grand Island and Katie Wilcox of Doniphan will be among the 22 Doane College students to study abroad this year. See and Wilcox will both be studying in London. Doane is affiliated with the Council of International Educational Exchange and International Studies Program of Central College. Students may apply to Doane's $1,000 travel scholarship to the program.

Academic honors

Joshua Gibson and Zachary Backus of Grand Island have qualified for the Winter Quarter Dean's List at Southeast Community College.

Valerie Williams of Grand Island was inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu, a national honor society at Creighton University. Alpha Sigma Nu is the highest honor that is bestowed on an individual from a Jesuit University based on criteria of service, loyalty and scholarship. Inductees are nominated by faculty, staff, administrators and Alpha Sigma Nu members.

Graduates

Erin Michelle Karner of St. Libory graduated from Southeast Community College with an associates of applied science degree in nursing.
