On April 19, more than 300 scouts and leaders from Western and Central Nebraska will be camping at Central Nebraska Regional Airport and attending classes at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center.

The goal of the camporee is to prepare scouts and their leaders for personal, community and regional emergencies, and to have them take those skills back to their home towns and families.

The Camporee is being hosted by Phillips Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Phillips Boy Scout Troop 911 and the Overland Trails Councils Boy Scout Council. The Saint Francis Medical Center Foundation has taken on the lead sponsorship for this event as part of their commitment to community preparedness and education.

The scouts will be learning skills and information on medicine, first aid/CPR, emergency preparedness, weather, fire safety, public health, fingerprinting, and drug awareness, crime prevention, and traffic safety.

In addition to other businesses and organizations who are supporting the Camporee, Hall and Adams County Management, Nebraska State Patrol, Grand Island Fire Department, Grand Island Rural Fire Department, various local volunteer fire departments, Hamilton County Sheriff Department, Central District Public Health Department, Nebraska Air Guard, local meteorologist, local physicians, local nurses, EMT's and Paramedics along with nursing students from UNMC, CCC and Creighton nursing programs will be assisting with this event. Central Nebraska Regional Airport Authority and the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training have also played a major role in making this opportunity available to these youth.

During the Saturday evening program, the Nebraska Air Guard's Chinook helicopter will be doing a fly over with a demonstration of an over 2,000 gallon water drop in a fire fighting display. At 7 p.m., Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy will be flying in to talk to scouts and leaders about volunteerism and community preparedness. This will be followed by various emergency and fire fighting demonstrations by the Grand Island Fire Department and Nebraska State Patrol.
