Grand Island Central Catholic overcame a 3-1 deficit with seven minutes left in the game to escape with a 4-3 shootout win over Seward on Monday.

The Crusaders (3-5) trailed 3-1 after Seward scored at the 72:30 mark of the second half. But Luke Wagoner scored at the 74:45 mark and Erick Ortiz followed with his second goal of the game with just under two minutes left in regulation to give GICC new life.

After a scoreless overtime the teams went to a shootout where GICC was successful on attempts by Wagoner, Manny Juarez and Eric Jensen, respectively. GICC goalie Zach Karn stopped Seward's second attempt and, when the Crusaders' John Lilley was successful on his attempt the win was sealed.

GICC coach Bruce Bombeck said the Crusaders didn't panic.

"The boys kept up," he said. "It was a whole team effort. When we were down they kept working hard and encouraging one another."

The Crusaders were playing without leading scorer Austin Witmer, who suffered a concussion against Lexington and sat out. While Bombeck praised the entire team, he also singled out the play of Karn.

"Zach Karn did a fabulous job," Bombeck said. "He had some huge saves for us and punted the ball out of the goal tremendously to get us some opportunities."
