Because of a growing enrollment and a new state mandate to have K-3 classes under 20 students, the Grand Island school board will be asked to buy four modular classrooms for the coming school year.
The classrooms are intended for West Lawn, Wasmer, Stolley Park and Starr Elementary schools. The total cost for the four classrooms are just over $1.22 million.
To plan for longer range growth, the board will be asked to hire Cannon Moss Brygger and Associates as the district's architect and Kucirek Engineering and Associates as the district engineer to work on various school building projects.
The architectural contract will run from April 2008 through 2012, when the district expects it will need to perform a number of building projects.
The engineering contract will last from April 2008 through March 31, 2013.
The board also will be asked to approve Johnson Controls' response for renewable energy services.
At the board's last meeting, Matt Leaper of Johnson Controls talked about a possible plan to have 25 percent of the district's energy needs filled by renewable energy, which he suggested could come from a mixture of wind turbines, solar electric power and solar thermal power to heat all of its domestic waster.
The board then issued a request for qualifications to see which firms might be interested in doing such work.
A handout on Johnson Controls' proposal will be available at the meeting.
The board also will be asked to approve a three-year lease for space at the Central District Health Department. The school district has a welcome center at the health department.
The center is used to assess immigrant students to make sure they have the proper placement for their language skills, whether that be in the regular classroom or some level of English language learner classroom.
There also will be reports on the National School Board Association national convention.
The board will also have a number of student and teacher recognitions. They include:
* Knickrehm fifth-grader Jacob Rojas, for first place in the Nebraska Arbor Day Foundation Poster Contest; Knickrehm fifth-grader Cornelio Jaimes, for first place in the Agriculture Week in Nebraska Poster Contest; and fifth-grade teacher Diane Meyer, for being named the 2008 Educator of the Year by the Nebraska Forest Service.
* Davin Jameson of Grand Island Senior High, for qualifying to compete at the YMCA National Short Course Swimming Championships.
* The College Access Class of 2008, for being graduates of The Education Quest College Access Program. Those students are Chloret Chavez, Haili Copas-Starke, Matt Eastwood, Alfredo Guerrero, Michael Hernandez, Kristina Lorsung, Michelle Manning, Isaias Martinez, Brianda Morales, Jose Moran, Teagan Nabity, Oscar Rafael, Carlota Rodriquez, Donna Ruiz, Jasmine Ruiz and Tommy Velasquez.
