There appears to be no pattern to the rash of broken vehicle windows that occurred early Thursday morning.
Broken windows on 21 vehicles were reported between 2 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Grand Island police Capt. Kerry Mehlin said.
The incidents occurred all over town with no real "rhyme or reason" to the chosen areas. The vehicles were parked on the street, in driveways or in apartment building parking lots, he said.
Some of the vehicles had slashed tires, and a few had items stolen from them as well, he said.
It appears that a blunt instrument had been used to smash various windows on the vehicles, he said.
Officers were following a "small lead" Thursday afternoon, he said.
To protect a vehicle, Mehlin suggests parking it in a garage, if available, or in a driveway as close to the house as possible. Having an outside light can also help deter criminal activity, he said.
