Grand Island Area Habitat is gearing up for its annual Can Jam this month.
The Can Jam is an event that Habitat for Humanity has each year with local elementary schools, including Grand Island public schools, Trinity Lutheran, Grand Island Christian and Central City Elementary.
Habitat for Humanity provides the schools with a packet and CD with information about aluminum can recycling, environmental education, activity sheets and other information.
Students from each school were invited to color Cans for Habitat sheets, which are on display at the Conestoga Mall. Winners and runners-up are:
Kindergarten: Taylor Turnbull (Howard) and Sami Crowder (Jefferson).
First grade: Regan Glock (Engelman) and Clarissa Orono (Central City).
Second grade: Lauren Frankforter (Stolley Park) and Abigail Javier (Howard).
Third grade: Mark Anthony Hernandez (Lincoln) and Hannak Kier (Engelman).
Fourth grade: Courtney Kunzman (Stolley Park) and Emily Colby (West Lawn).
Fifth grade: Shayla Sokol (Engelman) and Gabriella Barrios (Jefferson).
On April 17, Habitat will sponsor an event at the Grand Island Public Library at which kids can see recycling displays, a can house, a big block of crushed aluminum cans and recycling posters done by students at Barr Middle School, plus participate in some activities directed by the library staff. The library event will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
The week of April 21 through 25, the participating schools will have aluminum can drives. All the donations will be compiled in a semi at the mall, with the community invited to help fill the truck.
Then on April 28, volunteers will process the cans. Last year, Habitat recycled more than 2,900 pounds of cans during Can Jam Week.
The Can Jam was organized as part of Cans for Habitat in celebration of Earth Day, which will be on April 22.
Can Jam is in its fourth year in Grand Island.
