We give up. As always, Mother Nature rules. Just when we saw the official convocation on the backyard deck declaring spring to be here, the weather lady whipped up a gonzo case of winter gunk to turn the end of the week into chaos. Most of us aren't shoveling, so that was the highlight of the snow-rain-slush -whatever-mess that we all dealt with on Thursday and Friday. Mother Nature, that harsh mistress, had the last word, as is her prerogative. But it does make all of those gorgeous images from the Master's golf tournament a tad bitter to swallow this weekend.

Thank you to the city employees and to JBS Swift for some long days in hammering out a temporary fix to the disastrous water pollution situation at the city's wastewater treatment facility and the meatpacking plant. The long-term solution can't happen soon enough.

It looks like Central Nebraska will get a new air carrier at Grand Island's Central Nebraska Regional Airport. The Hawaii Island Air proposal looked impressive and the airport board readily adopted the proposal Friday. The mayor and city council must endorse the proposal and it then goes to the Department of Transportation. The DOT can do whatever it wants to and does not have to follow the city's recommendation. We've been there before, haven't we?

Congratulations to the Giltner community for showing other rural communities how to roll up their sleeves and tackle projects. They open a new Community Center today and in doing so, chalk up another civic accomplishment. The town has every right to be proud of the new facility, which cost $640,000 without a nickel of tax money involved. Giltner has been a busy place the past few years, adding a new water tower, newly renovated ballfields and creating a new housing subdivision to the community. The civic pride and sense of accomplishment from these projects will no doubt lead to even more improvements to this energetic town.
