Nebraska and Baylor to play Big 12 doubleheader on Sunday in Lincoln

Nebraska softball team begins the bulk of its Big 12 Conference schedule this weekend as the Huskers host the Baylor Bears at Bowlin Stadium. In a change to the original schedule, there will be no game on Saturday and the teams will play a doubleheader betinning at 1 p.m. Sunday. The two-game series with Baylor marks the beginning of a stretch that will see NU play 12 of its final 14 contests against conference foes, including nine at home.

Tickets for Sunday's doubleheader and all future home contests can be purchased online by visiting Huskers.com, over the phone by calling 1-800-8-BIG-RED or at the Bowlin Stadium ticket office 90 minutes prior to first pitch. Fans who had tickets for Saturday's game can bring their unused ticket stub for general admission seating to any future game. Live audio for both games against Baylor will air for free on Huskers.com, while the doubleheader will also be video streamed live for HuskersNSide subscribers.

Nebraska will be looking for its first Big 12 victory of the season on Sunday, but a win will not come easily against the defending regular-season champions. Baylor opened the conference season with a 1-5 record, but the Bears have rebounded to win two of their last three games, posting victories over strong Texas and Kansas squads.

Baylor is just 1-3 in Big 12 road games this season, but the Bears won at Texas in their last road contest, a feat Nebraska was unable to accomplish as the Huskers were swept in Austin in their first two conference games of the season. Entering this season, Baylor also had the distinction of being one of only two Big 12 schools - and the only program from the South division - to win a conference game at Bowlin Stadium over the past two seasons. Nebraska posted a league-best 15-2 record against conference opponents at Bowlin Stadium the past two seasons, but NU is 0-2 at home this season after dropping a pair of games to an Oklahoma squad that has since moved into the top 10 of the national rankings.

Tryouts for 7-8 Scorpion teams to be conducted on Sunday, April 20, 27

The Central Nebraska Girls Softball Association (CNGSA) will be holding tryouts for the 7-8 year old Scorpion teams from 2-4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Ryder Park Softball Complex. The tryouts will on fields A and B, which are located west of the Armory. The tryouts for this program will be held again from noon to 2 p.m. on April 20 and April 27 at the softball fields at Grand Island Senior High School. The girls need to bring their gloves with them to the tryouts.

No. 15 Husker women's team to compete at NCAA Southeast Regional

The No. 15 Nebraska women's gymnastics team travels to the NCAA Southeast Regional in Gainesville, Fla., this Saturday. Competition begins at 6 p.m at the University of Florida's O'Connell Center. The Huskers face No. 3 Florida, No. 9 UCLA, No. 21 North Carolina State, No. 25 West Virginia and North Carolina.

The competition also includes five all-around competitors and one individual event specialist per event. The top two teams and top two all-around competitors who are not part of an advancing team will receive an automatic berth to the 2008 NCAA Championships hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens, April 24-26.

NU is 10-7 on the year after a fourth-place showing at the Big 12 Championships two weeks ago, when junior Tricia Woo won the first Big 12 beam title of her career with a 9.90. Woo and seniors Emily Parsons and Desire' Sniatynski were all named to the All-Big 12 Championship team for their performances and also earned All-Big 12 accolades a week earlier.

* COLLEGE TENNIS

NU women down Missouri 5-2

LINCOLN The Nebraska women's tennis team recovered from a slow start to defeat the Missouri Tigers 5-2 on Friday morning at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The win evens NU's record to 4-4 in the Big 12 and 15-4 overall, while Missouri drops to 9-11 and 1-7 in the Big 12.

The Huskers dug themselves in a hole early, as they weren't able to find a rhythm in doubles play, and dropped two of the three matches. At No. 1 doubles, Jana Albers and Imke Reimesr improved to 6-2 in the Big 12 with an 8-4 win, but the Huskers lost 8-2 at No. 2 and 8-3 at No. 3, giving Missouri a 1-0 lead going into singles play.

"We had good energy out there in doubles," said head coach Scott Jacobson. "But sometimes you just don't strike it as clean as you'd like, and today was one of those days. You've got to give Missouir credit too, because they really played great doubles."

Nebraska turned it up in singles play, quickly taking a 2-1 lead after Stephanie Evans and Amber Chandronnait won at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Missouri tied it at 2-2 with Sofia Ayala's win over Maria Ring at No. 6 singles, but that would be the last point the Huskers would concede on the day. Reimers made it 3-2 Nebraska with a three-set victory at No. 1 singles, and Albers clinched the match for NU with a victory at No. 3 singles. Wiveca Swarting closed the scoring with a straight-set victory at No. 2 singles.

LINCOLN The Nebraska men's tennis team fell to 0-3 in conference play on Friday afternoon when they came out on the losing end of a 5-2 match against No. 21 Texas A&M at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The loss makes the Huskers 9-12 overall this spring, while the Aggies improved to 11-8 and 2-4 in Big 12 play.

The Huskers got off to a rocky start, losing all three doubles matches and heading into singles play in a 1-0 hole. The loss of the doubles point was a bad omen for Nebraska, which heading into the day's match was 0-10 when it dropped the doubles point.

Nebraska wouldn't go down without a fight, however. NU's David Bendheim defeated his third ranked opponent of the season, beating 15th-ranked Conor Pollock in a wild match. Both sets went into tiebreakers, with Bendheim winning both, including a 12-10 thriller in the first-set tiebreaker. Freshman Calin Paar also defeated a ranked opponent, A&M's Wil Spencer, the 90th-ranked player in the nation, 6-4, 6-4. Husker hammer throwers start off John Jacobs Invitational in Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. - Sunny skies with a slight breeze and 60-degree temperatures welcomed the Husker track and field team to the John Jacobs T&F Complex on Friday afternoon for the John Jacobs Invitational on the campus of the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla.

With the majority of the Big Red competing on Saturday, the Husker hammer throw group took to the ring at 5 p.m. for the only event of the day.

The women opened the meet with Lisa Minnick and Tamara Solari competing in the 11 athlete field. For the second-straight week Minnick posted the top mark for the Huskers with a new personal-best throw of 161-1 (49.11). Minnick finished fifth overall while posting the fourth-best collegiate mark.
