Gregory M. Franzwa, author of the new book, "The Mormon Trail Revisited," will present a program on the national historic trail at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at the Grand Island Public Library.

The 45 minute slide show will project images of the 1,400-mile trail from Nauvoo, Ill., through Iowa, Nebraska and Wyoming to the future home of the Mormon pioneers, the valley of the Great Salt Lake in Utah. This will be Franzwa's second appearance at the Grand Island library.

The program will be followed by a question-and-answer session and book signing.

There will also be a similar presentation at the Central City Public Library at 2 p.m. earlier that same day.

Dog event, scheduled for Sunday, is canceled

The Canine Affair that was scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Hastings Dog Park has been canceled because of inclement weather and the lack of time to prepare the park for the event.

A similar event may be planned for later this fall. More information will be distributed at that time.

The Central Honors Institute, an academic camp for Nebraska youth, has been set for July 13 through 18 at Central Community College-Columbus.

The six-day residential camp is open to students who will begin the seventh or eighth grade in the fall of 2008 and have demonstrated high ability in language arts, math and/or science.

Camp participants attend class during the day, enjoy social activities in the evening, and stay overnight in the college's residence hall.

Applications must be received by May 1. Participants will be selected on the basis of their academic performance and a recommendation from their teacher or counselor. The cost is $325 through June 13 and $350 after that date.

For more information or to request an application, contact Lori Neid at (402) 562-1451; toll-free in Nebraska at (877) 222-0780, ext. 1451; or by e-mail at lneid@cccneb.edu.
