The governor may be coming to Grand Island on Wednesday to sign LB1116, the bill to move the State Fair to Fonner Park, into law.
With three days left in this legislative session, the bill will likely be up for its third and final vote on Wednesday morning, said Cindy Johnson, president of the Grand Island Area Chamber of Commerce.
Assuming the bill passes, Gov. Dave Heineman is scheduled to be at Grand Island's Bosselman Conference Center at 1:30 p.m. that same day to sign the bill into law, Johnson said.
Jen Rae Hein, Heineman's communications director, said she couldn't confirm whether the governor would be in Grand Island for a bill signing Wednesday.
The Legislature was in recess Monday, and a representative from the office of state Sen. Mike Flood of Norfolk, speaker of the Legislature, couldn't confirm whether LB1116 would be scheduled for a vote Wednesday morning.
The last day of the legislative session is Thursday.
"(I'm) very optimistic at this point that it's going to be a favorable vote on Wednesday," Johnson said.
LB1116 would move the State Fair from Lincoln to Grand Island by 2010. The land at the current State Fair Park would then be free for the University of Nebraska to build a public/private research park adjacent to its downtown Lincoln campus.
