Islanders fall in tournament
LINCOLN Lincoln High scored twice in the seventh inning to take a 4-3 victory over Grand Island in the first round of the Heartland Athletic Conference Tournament at Sherman Field in Lincoln.
"We just didn't get some defensive execution we needed," Grand Island coach Rick Kissack said. "There were some plays we just didn't quite finish that unfortunately came back to haunt us."
Senior Eric Schwieger, who will sign to play baseball at Wayne State on Wednesday, got his first start of the season after returning from shoulder surgery.
Schwieger pitched five innings and gave up no earned runs with five strikeouts and just one walk.
Kissack was glad to see Schwieger pitch well.
"We had some bright spots," Kissack said. "I've been very impressed with Max Ayoub (at catcher) who has stepped in for Slade Bolles and done a great job. He has a bright future in our program."
The Islanders will play at Lincoln Pius X today.
