GISH blanks Norfolk, 2-0

NORFOLK It was the night of freshmen for Grand Island Senior High in its 2-0 win over Norfolk on Tuesday.

Freshmen Logan Mendez (assisted by Hector Gutierez) and Eder Crispin each scored second-half goals and Chris Carroll preserved the win in goal for the Islanders (4-6).

"It was a night-and-day performance for us," GISH coach Jeremy Jensen said, referring to his team's 2-1 loss to Lincoln North Star on Monday. "I really challenged the younger kids and they stepped up."

Columbus Scotus shuts down GICC

COLUMBUS Columbus Scotus overwhelmed Grand Island Central Catholic 6-0 Tuesday afternoon.

Scotus, which led 2-0 at the half, didn't let up in the second half.

"We had 13 shots on goal in the first half," GICC coach Gary Witmer said. "But in the second half Columbus Scotus had the wind with them and they are a very good team. We had a lot of trouble getting the ball out of defensive end."

The Crusaders fell to 4-8 with the loss.

Islanders claim shootout win

NORFOLK One day after falling in a shootout, Grand Island Senior High made sure it ended up on the opposite end of the final result.

Hannah DeWitt, Audie Aguilar and Anna Srivisay scored in a shootout to help the Islanders down Norfolk 2-1 on Tuesday.

The shootout was tied 2-2 when DeWitt scored to close out the match.

"It was pretty exciting," Islander coach Chuck DeWitt said. "You could see their determination to not (lose in a shootout) two days in a row. That's a big monkey off our backs."

Norfolk (2-7) took the lead off a header in the 76th minute.

But Grand Island (2-8) found a way to answer. Hannah Gappa headed a pass to Aguilar up the middle, and she split a pair of defenders and scored with 1:20 left in regulation.

In the shootout, Islander goalkeeper Ali Higgins knocked down a pair of tries by the Panthers to aid her team to the victory, which snapped a four-game losing streak.

Chuck DeWitt said the team played well without Mikayla Walsh, who was injured in Monday's match against Lincoln North Star.

"Brenna Rasmussen moved from high defender to Mikayla's sweeper spot, and she did a good job," he said. "Erica Iversen came in (to the lineup) and played well.

"Everyone had a good game. This should give the girls a lot of confidence."

Crusaders down Hastings Adams Central, 5-4

HASTINGS Grand Island Central Catholic used a key win by Hannah Bolton at No. 3 singles en route to a 5-4 dual win over Adams Central.

The Crusaders were trailing 3-2 in the match when Bolton erased a 7-5 deficit in her match to close out the next four games and win 9-7.

"If there was a key match for us, that was it," GICC coach Matt Westfall said. "Then after that we only had to win two of three doubles matches, and we were confident we could do that."

GICC got singles wins from Bolton, Jessica Wojcik (No. 4) and Ashley Chalupa (No. 5). The Crusader doubles teams of Bolton and Wojcik (No. 1) and Jessica Bender and Chalupa (No. 2) also earned wins.

Wesfall said it was good to get a win on a trying day with hot, gusty winds blowing fiercely.

"It was horrible," he said. "It was kind of survival out there. The kids did a great job coming back today."
