Grand Island continues to send a steady stream of players onto college baseball programs.
The latest to decide where he'll make that jump is Islander senior pitcher Eric Schwieger, who signed a letter of intent on Wednesday to play for Wayne State.
"The coaches were really nice to me," Schwieger said. "They were the first ones that contacted me to play college baseball. They were the only ones that really stuck with me through my shoulder surgery."
Schwieger made an impressive varsity debut last season. He went 5-1 with three saves and posted a 1.91 ERA.
He suffered a shoulder injury during the Legion season and just returned to action. He made his first start of the year Monday against Lincoln High and gave up no earned runs over five innings of work.
It was his second appearance of the year. He'd previously pitched three innings of relief to earn the win against previously undefeated Papillion-LaVista South.
"It's great," Schwieger said of his return to action. "It's really nice. I was really excited my first game back against Papillion."
Schwieger said former Islander teammate Matt Hilligas helped show him around when he visited Wayne State.
"Matt helped me with my decision to go to Wayne," Schwieger said. "I stayed with him one night when I was there."
Schwieger said the strong tradition of Grand Island players going on to college like Ross Helleberg, Cody Raile and Nate Frew from last year's team is a big plus.
"It's helped a lot," Schwieger said. "Last year we had numerous guys go on to play at Omaha, Wayne and Kearney. I talk to them a lot on the phone, seeing how it is and everything."
